Weekend Grilling 2018 Challenge

From all of us here at Weekend Grilling, we truly wish you nothing but the best for 2018!  For myself, 2017 brought many fails and I’m happy to see that year go.  But you need to fail before you succeed, so I’m looking forward to a happy and prosperous 2018 and wish the same to you.

For 2018 I have made several resolutions but one of them I would like to not only to share with you, but ask that perhaps you add it to your list as well!

For 2018 – I  resolve to smoke or grill 18 new items/dishes/meals on my grill!  I know it does not sound like much, but think about it.  How many new things have you tried on your grill last year?  5 or so I bet…..

When the wife and I meal plan on Thursday nights for the upcoming weekend and week, she will always ask me, what are you going to grill or smoke for us this weekend.  The first thing I tell her is – “Say it correctly using the Weekend Grilling Tag Line – What You Smoking”!  After she tells me gives me the customary ha-ha whatever grin, I go over the same list:

  1. Pulled pork
  2. Brisket
  3. Ribs
  4. Shrimp
  5. Steak
  6. Burgers
  7. Sausages
  8. Chicken

Right about there I always stop.  Seriously?  Sure I can have 10 different cuts of steak, 20 different flavors of burgers and sausages, but nothing else?

About a year ago I bought a cookbook that had nothing but grilling and smoking fish recipes and techniques.  A somewhat local author I heard on NPR out of Minnesota I believe.  I was so anxious to get this cookbook and start grilling fish.  Not just Shrimp, but actual fish.  Fish that I grew  up with – Perch, Blue Gills and Walleye.

What fish did I grill in 2017 – yep, just shrimp.  Maybe scallops once I think.  Not one other type of seafood.  I gave the cookbook to my brother hoping that at least he would get some use out of it.  Just another FAIL for me in 2017.

This needs to change and it starts now, fresh here in 2018 and I ask that you come along with me in this tasty and exciting journey.  Let’s together explore new cuts of beef, new types of seafood, new – anything!  I’m not going to just whip out 18 new things in the first 18 days, that’s not what I’m talking about.  I want 18 items that you have not grilled in the last say – 5 years, or never perhaps.  It’s been at least 5 years since I have grilled:

  1. Lamb (I know I bought some to grill a few years back, probably still in that overloaded freezer)
  2. Cornish Hens (so delicious as I remember)
  3. Skirt Steak – For Fajitas like my buddy Antonio made for me a few years back.
  4. Beef Jerky
  5. I can’t even think about more than 5 new items I’m so locked into the same-old same-old!

What do you say Weekend Grilling Fans?  Will you join me in first annual Weekend Grilling New Year’s Challenge?
