Anyone who is into outdoor cooking knows about Traeger Grills as it is one of the most popular brands in the United States of America. They are into manufacturing and selling grills, smokers, and other accessories for outdoor cooking, as well as a wide range of wood pellets.

As the premium BBQ wood pellets, you can easily get a unique pure hardwood taste. Furthermore, these pellets guarantee an excellent blue smoke to flavor the food. Also, Traeger claims that this product is 100% all-natural hardwood with no necessary fillers or agent.

No matter which cooking style you want to perform such as smoking, braising, roasting, or baking, the Traeger Grills Hickory always gives a particular flavor to the food. Since there is a great consistency while using this product, it’s truly cost-efficient.

Although the small drawback is not to adjust the temp up to 3200F, you can avail it for smoking beef, chicken, and veggies with ease.

My Impression

I’ve got to say when it comes to Traeger and, of course, when it comes to apple and hickory I’m all good there with them. I like Traeger pellets. I’ve had no problems with Traeger pellets. Traeger pellets work great for me. Traeger pellets produce great smoke for me. And so, basically, when I’m doing smoking and I’ve said I used the apple and the hickory, my choice of what pellets I’m going to use, I’m going to use the apple and the hickory of Traeger brand for my smokes.

But there’s also another that I’ll mention later that I also use that is a real fave of mine. So there are really three favorites of mine. There’s Traeger applewood, Traeger hickory, and another. I just mention the turkey because I really want to try this turkey sometime because it looks real interesting that Traeger has these pellets and the brine and all that is made up for a turkey cook, so I’m going to try that sometime. If any of you have tried that Traeger turkey with the brine in the pellets, let me know. They do charge a premium for that, but if you’ve tried it let me know. I might try it myself sometime.

  • Perfect to use with all types of smokers and grills and all types of food.
  • Low-moisture wood pellets
  • Perfect to add flavor to beef, poultry, seafood, and wild gaming animals
  • Not highly recommended for baking and cooking pork and vegetables
  • Not for one-time used

GMG is another trustable name in smoking and cooking industry and they have contributed a lot here with great grills and other products. This is a 100% hardwood pellet that burns well and provides a great flavor to your food.

GMG claims that this is 100% hardwood, and they aren’t lying. Most of the consumers mentioned that they got proper flavor from the pellets.

This pellet do last long for longer cooking need, burns consistent and clean and provides consistent heating with great BTU (heat measuring unit). It provides more BTU than other pellets so a lesser volume than others will do the job for you, and thus it’s cost efficient. This is an FDA approved pellet and it’s certainly good enough to get your job done.

My Impression

When it comes to Green Mountain Grill’s pellets, let’s start with the good, and the good is that third bog of pellets I mentioned that I like. There’s three that I really like. This is number three, the Green Mountain Grill’s Premium Gold Blend. I really like this one big time. Great for chicken and pork. It’s a combination of red oak, hickory, and maple. I’d say when it comes to chicken and pork, I’ll use this Green Mountain Grill’s Premium Gold Blend before I’ll use hickory because it’s that good to me a far as how this bled is.

Now, if I’m doing some beef or like a brisket or something, then I’m going to go to that hickory. So, you know, that’s basically my breakdown. I can go with the Traeger hickory or the Green Mountain Grill’s Gold Blend, but Gold Blend is just better for pork and chicken in my opinion.

  • 100% hardwood materials
  • Produces more heat than other pellets with the same volume
  • Cost efficient.
  • Comes from a trusted name in the industry.
  • May have oak or alder filler, in a very little amount, which is a comparatively lower quality hardwood.
  • Produces denser ash being a hardwood pellet.

Green Mountain Grill Premium Fruitwood Blend Pellets

Green Mountain Grills Premium Fruitwood Pure Hardwood...
  • Wood pellets that add flavor to enhance your grilling experience
  • Premium gold pellets bring out the sweet flavor of cherry, beech. and...
  • Infuse pure wood flavor into everything you grill, bake roast, braise,...
  • Oak-based and a larger diameter pellet that allows them to last longer...
  • Produce a long burn with modest smoke

The GMG is a wood pellet made from pure hardwood. This means that there’s no biproducts and additives that’s why you can expect the best flavor that you desire. Using hardwood pellets spares you from cleaning up the ash, instead enjoy more time grilling.

This brand of wood pellets come with different flavors that would suit your cooking preferences. The pellets are kiln-dried virgin hardwood that’s why it does not only provide a better flavor, but also more efficient smoking.

Likewise, it has ultra-low moisture content. Thus, many customers who have been using this product were satisfied and happy.

My Impression

I call these the weak because, to me, their flavors are just weak. I mean, I’ve used them, and they just seem weak. The fruitwood blend, it’s a blend of cherry, beech, pecan. I’ve tried it on fish. I’ve tried it on chicken. It’s just weak is all I can say. To me, the strength of the flavor is weak. Now, it’s probably not so bad on a fish, but definitely like a chick or something, personally, I just don’t do it even if I’m doing fish or some. I’ll just go to applewood.

  • A unique aroma that you’d expect from a hickory pellet.
  • 100% selected & fully pressed hickory material
  • Provides consistent burns and High BTU.
  • High-quality manufacturing process and raw material selection
  • The trusted manufacturer with insurance of quality.
  • Produces denser as just like another hardwood pellet.

  • Perfect for grilling and outdoor cooking

This smoking pellet is a combination of four quality hardwoods including black oak, hickory, elm, and mesquite. It does not contain alder materials and it has been one of most favored by many barbecue lovers.

Since it is made from 100% hardwood materials, it is expected that the moisture content is very low. It burns consistently and stables regardless of any cooking temperature. Smoking food using this smoking pellets enhances the flavor and aroma.

Customers who have been using this wood pellets were satisfied with it and they said that it works better for pulled pork that requires long smoke or brisket that needs a very long smoke.

My Impression

When it comes to the Green Mountain Grill’s Premium Texas Blend, it’s a mixture of black oak, hickory, and mesquite. And that one, also just weak. I’ve used it on briskets. I’ve used it on steaks. It’s just weak to me. It’s just not strong enough, not solid enough a smoke flavor that I want. You may see me using Premium fruitwood blend and Premium Texas Blend in cooks but it’s only because I bought so much of it. That’s the only reason I use it. I’m just using it to get through the supply that I have, but I don’t think I’ll be buying any more of these when it comes to fruitwood or Premium Texas Blend.

  • 100% hardwood, made from the mix of 4 top-quality hardwoods.
  • Great aroma, enhances the flavor of cooking.
  • Provides stable burn.
  • From a trustworthy manufacturer, the product performs as promised.
  • Produces denser ash as waste, just like all other hardwood pellets.

  • Perfect blend of Maple, Hickory, and Cherry
  • Bag weight: 20 lbs

You don’t need to be at a fancy BBQ competition to use these, and they’re not expensive either. Some people prefer one type of wood in particular and would rather avoid using blends, or they prefer to put their blends together, and if that’s you – all the more power to you, but you’ll want to skip past these and check out another highlight from this list. We reviewed a number of pellet smokers, and camp chefs line is solid.

If you’re not at the point where you’re trying to dial in every single detail of your smoke to the exact decimal point, and you’re fine with using a blend that someone else has put together, especially when that “someone else” is Camp Chef, one of the top companies in the game, then this is an excellent option.

Some have remarked that this blend seems to leave behind less dust and ash then some other brands, it’s undoubtedly a premium product. The price of a 20-pound bag is reasonable, and it’s well-reviewed overall.

These are 100% all natural, food grade pellets for your pellet grill and smokers. It’s made from a variety of premium hardwoods, namely cherry, hickory, and maple. Can’t decide which type of wood to use? Then here’s a chance to try all 3 of the best, together at the same time. It gives you a very well-rounded and versatile smoked flavor that goes great with just about anything you could toss in that smoker of yours.

These pellets are made in America and are appealing for their reasonable price and the overall quality and taste that you’ll get with them.

Perfect Mix

CookinPellets 40PM Perfect Mix, 1 Pack, Brown
  • Top 4 hardwoods only
  • 100% of what we say it is NO oak or alder filler
  • 100% hardwoods
  • Will not void any manufacturers warranty!

Here’s another favorite choice, this time around it comes in a 40-pound bag. This is another blend, meaning it consists of multiple types of wood. Per pound, it’s a bit more expensive than some of the others we’ll be looking at, but CookinPellets is a brand that gets right down to business, no frills, no gimmicks, just high-quality pellets for your smoker. There’s no fancy packaging, no distractions… if you’re in the business of cooking up some perfectly smoked food, business is good.

While our top listed blend featured three different premium hardwoods, this one has four, for an even more diverse taste. These pellets are made using only the heartwoods from the center of the log, and never contains any bark.

They don’t add any oils or filler woods (When it comes to smoking, oak and alder are sometimes known as filler woods, or filler can just be lower quality parts of the same tree) It’s just the right stuff here. It’s got a hickory base and contains hard maple, apple, and cherry. It makes a great combination no matter what’s on the menu.

They call it the “Perfect Mix, ” and it’s hard to argue with that. It’s worth mentioning that some manufacturers claim that using other brands of pellets can void your warranty, however that’s most likely illegal wherever you live  (For them to actually deny warranty issues based on that, not for them to say they can), yet some still decide to put those stickers on their machines in order to mislead people into avoiding other brands of pellets.

Granted, some very low-quality pellets could cause issues, but these from CookinPellets will not void your warranty at all, they’re at least as good as any of the grill manufacture’s brands, and even better in a lot of cases.

Best Applewood and Hickory Pellets

Camp Chef Orchard Apple BBQ Pellets, 100% Premium Hardwood...
  • 100% all-natural food grade pellets
  • Made from premium solid hardwoods
  • Ultra-low moisture content
  • Clean virgin hardwood - no fillers, all natural
  • Bag weight: 20 lbs

Looking for something that’s not part of a mix or combination? Let’s get things going with these apple wood grill pellets by Camp Chef. These will work great with any brand of grill, and if you want that smoky apple taste, this just might be your best bet. The flavor of the applewood stands out a lot more compared to some of the combination bags we’ve looked it because there’s no mixture here – it’s just 100% apple. Combine these pellets with a camp chef pellet grill we reviewed, and you can’t go wrong.

There are no oils or additional flavors added, no filler at all; this is made from strictly high-quality 100% clean burning virgin apple hardwood. These pellets are made in the United States of America and are a standard for any home-smoker. They burn well and give you an incredible flavor.

These pellets aren’t just for Camp Chef brand pellet grills; they’ll work with any brand, from Traeger to Pit Boss, and anything else. You can check out some of the different pellet grill recipes out there to get a feel for what you’re going to be smoking, and which woods may suit it best, or just go with a mixture.

This is an excellent quality wood; the price is solid too, these are a solid choice, especially if you’re picking up multiple different bags to try – we strongly recommend grabbing one of these. They’re very-well reviewed, and may just become your “go-to” when you’re looking to load up some Applewood into the ‘ol smoker.

Pit Boss BBQ Wood Pellets

Pit Boss BBQ Wood Pellets, 40 lb., BBQ Blend
  • 100% hardwood blend - Maple, Hickory & Cherry
  • No fillers
  • 100% Natural - No scents, sprays, glues or chemicals
  • Versatile blend is perfact for pork, chicken, beef or vegetables
  • Burns hotter and cleaner

Pit Boss is another big name in the smoker world and these are some of their very best wood pellets for smoking. You can use them with any pellet grill, don’t fall for the old myth that the brand of pellets need to match the grill.

Pit Boss’ wood pellets are available in a competition blend, in hickory, or in apple, depending on which flavor you prefer for whatever you’re going to be smoking up. Again, we think it’s a good idea to simply buy multiple bags. This bad right here is 40 pounds. Most of the time, pellets either come in twenty or forty pound bags. Pit boss always makes solid starter grills, we reviewed pit boss in this article, be sure to check it out.

The raw wood for these pellets is sourced right here in North America. These pellets are free from any spray-on scents, glues, or chemicals and they can burn hotter and cleaner than lower-quality options. These pellets are bound together by the natural adhesives in the wood itself, there’s nothing else added in, which helps them burn so cleanly.

The flavor profile of the competition blend is a combination of very mild tartness, and a lot of savory and sweet tones. It combines hickory, maple and cherry hardwoods from North America and offers a very versatile option if you aren’t really sure what else to get.

These Pit Boss pellets are also available in apple, which offers a smoky taste with a mild sweetness on top. It goes great with pork, or baked goods. There are no artificial flavors in this bag, no glues, no chemicals, none of that stuff.

Finally, these are available in hickory. The flavor profile is very rich, almost reminds you of bacon. These are great for any meats, really, it’s hard to pick one over another, but chickens and turkeys and other birds go particularly nice with the hickory taste.

A 40 pound bag will last you a while, but why not grab a couple bags at once? We’re strong advocates of comparing them “side to side” (As in, one day you use one type of pellet, then the next day or later that week you try the other kind).

Alternate, see what you like best, then you can really start to dial in the perfect temperatures and settings for different foods. You wouldn’t have just one type of herb or spice in your pantry, right? So why have just one type of wood pellets for your smoker?

  • 10 uses per bag (only 1/3 cup per use is needed) - No soaking...

  • Proudly Made in the USA

This twenty-pound bag of pellets from BBQ’rs Delight is another solid choice. The mesquite BBQ flavor that comes out in the smoke from these pellets will make you salivate; the hardest part is going to be waiting for the food to be done. These have no fillers or additives in them and are made from 100% hardwood.

These pellets are known to produce less ash than some other options out there, which is a nice feature. Less ash produced means less ash to clean up afterward. They burn clean and don’t harm the environment, not your food; they’ll simply add a beautiful smoky flavor profile.

Now, it’s worth noting that these may not be 100% mesquite, and it’s something that’s up for debate, as there are claims that they’re made using mesquite along with other hardwoods. That doesn’t necessarily mean those different woods are “filler” woods, and blends aren’t uncommon, but it’s just something to keep in mind. If you’re looking for pellets made entirely of mesquite and nothing else, you’ll want some 100% mesquite pellets, and there are plenty to choose from.

Some find that the flavor from pure mesquite can be a bit much, and they prefer a more toned down taste, and some even mix it with alder or other woods after the fact.

These are some GMG pellets that I don’t use. I’m going to say that I don’t have anything against them because I haven’t used them. I’ll just give a breakdown. Then I’ll talk about why. But the GMG Premium Apple Blend, it’s a blend of apple, hickory, and red oak blend. I’m going to come back to that. And then, when it comes to the GMG smoker tube with Gourmet Blend, it has some blend of hardwoods. They don’t really seem to make it clear which hardwoods they’re using there.

Here’s why I don’t use these two. The Apple Blend, you know, if I want apple, I’m just going to go to straight apple. So I’m going to get Traeger Apple. I’m not really a fan of blending the apple. And I think that may not be something that works out as well. It’s just not something that I’m looking to do. I don’t want my apple mixed up, so I just leave the Green Mountain Grill’s Apple alone.

Green Mountain Grills Gourmet Pellet Blend

Green Mountain Grills Gourmet Grill Oak, Hickory, & Mesquite...
  • SPICE IT UP: Spice up your grilled masterpieces with this compact,...
  • GENUINE WOOD FLAVOR: Crafted from the perfect blend of oak, hickory,...
  • COMPACT BAG: Compact design is perfect for on-the-go outdoor...
  • COMPATIBLE WITH: Works with gas, charcoal, electric, and pellet grills
  • STANDS UPRIGHT: Bag conveniently stands upright so you don't have to...

Now, when it comes to their smoker tube with Gourmet Blend, the reason I don’t use that, and you know, a lot of people ask me, “Why don’t you use a smoker tube?” I don’t want to use a smoker tube. I bought a smoker. If that smoker can’t get the job done, well gah-lee, you know. If that smoker can’t get the job done by itself, you know, I’m walking away from the smokers. If I’ve got to go and on top of a smoker get a tube to help the smoker smoke … I like using smokes in my smoker or pellets in my smoker. They get the job done well on their own.

Now, sure, if I was using that weak fruitwood blend all the time and was going to keep using it after my supply runs out, then yeah, it probably does need some help. I’d probably go get a smoker tube. But the way I see it, I’m going to use pellets after I exhaust the supply of the weak ones I have that have the smoke that I like, that Traeger hickory, that Traeger apple, that Green Mountain Grill’s Premium Gold Blend. You know, that’s the way I’m rolling. That’s why I don’t use these.

Bottom Line

Now, as for the other pellets out there, I’ll say that there are plenty of other great pellets out there, but I’m a best bang for the buck type of guy. The others cost more. I’m about finding a good deal that works well for me, so I stick with those that work well for me and don’t hurt my pocket more. There’s a lot of recommendations for a lot of others and when I look at the price, no, not worth it. I can get a good smoke that makes me happy out of what I know and enjoy. If there’s something else that comes out there that’s in a decent price range that works well with my smoker, then so be it. But that’s the way that I roll at the moment.

Best Smoking Pellets Buying Guide

Once you’ve got a nice new pellet smoker, some perfectly grained cuts of meat, and a beautiful day to make some magic happen – all you’re missing are the best wood pellets for smoking.

A great smoker is only as good as the quality of the pellets, so you’re wise not to underestimate this part of the equation.

Every brand of smoker will tell you that they have the best smoker pellets, but can they all be telling the truth?

Granted, specific pellets excel in different types of conditions or have tastes that may appeal to different people; some will burn a bit hotter, some will cook a bit longer, some will burn more quickly but offer a smoker flavor, and so on and so forth.

The point we’re trying to make is that there isn’t necessarily a be-all-end-all number one choice that’s going to be perfect for everyone, but none the less – we’ve taken the best offerings from the top brands around the block for a test drive, and we’re here to report back with our results.

[Top5] Best Smoking Pellets – Best Bang for the Buck Wood Pellets for SmokersWood pellets are undoubtedly the eco-friendly alternative heat sources for outdoor cooking. They are also great ways to add some authentic hardwood-smoke flavor to your vegetables, meat, seafood, and baked goodies.

Although there are a lot of brands available, we have mentioned three of the best when it comes to producing correctly and evenly cooked food. They are also the ones that are free from chemicals and are compatible with many smokers and grillers.

Look for Food-Grade

[Top5] Best Smoking Pellets – Best Bang for the Buck Wood Pellets for SmokersBe sure that you are using only food-grade pellets for cooking with your pellet grill. Some grillers will tell you that heating pellets (that is, wood pellets used in wood-burning stoves) will work just as well, but this isn’t necessarily true. Many types of heating pellets are made from woods that you wouldn’t want to use for smoking, like pine or spruce. These woods will ruin the flavor of your food. Heating pellets may also be sourced from wood products like plywood or particleboard, and include binding agents that could also sour the flavour of your meat.

In short, since heating pellets are not produced with food consumption in mind, there are no real standards you can count on when it comes to safe wood sources and binders. This isn’t an issue if you’re using the wood to heat your home; but when you’re talking about food, you could be risking more than just the taste. Stay safe and cook smart with food-grade wood pellets. Ours are made from pure hardwood, kiln-dried and heat-compacted with no fillers or binders. They’ll burn faster and cleaner than anything else you’ll find on the market.

Which Flavor of the Smoking Pellets Should You Get?

Next, you want to pair the best pellets with the meal you’re cooking on the grill. The “flavor” of the pellets has less to do with the actual flavor of the wood and more to do with the strength of the smoke flavor you get from burning it. You can think of pellet flavor on a scale from mild to strong; mild flavors work best with delicate foods, while strong flavors work best with heartier foods. Check out our flavor guide below.

Types of Wood for types of Meat

For the types of wood for types of meat, fruit woods and maple are typical for vegetables if you’re wanting to smoke some vegetables. Fruit woods, alder, pecan, and similar types of fruit trees, they’re good for fish, chicken, the whole chicken, also lamb. These are very light woods, so you would use them for something that is going to take on smoke very easily, and you don’t want to overwhelm smoke.

Oak and hickory are good for pork, beef, chicken wings. Notice earlier I said in number two that the whole chicken is good for fruit woods, I personally prefer something like a hickory for my pork, beef, and my wings, and other individual chicken parts. So I make sure I note that’s my personal preference. A lot of people would say use your fruit woods for any type of chicken. I definitely like hickory on my wings and other chicken parts. When it comes to a whole chicken, I like to use a fruit wood. And it may just be because individual parts are going to cook a little faster than a whole chicken, but I like that good smoke.

When it comes to hickory and mesquite, that’s more for your beef and your bison. I have to say that for myself, when it comes to the beef brisket, I definitely like some hickory on that, for bison, also some good hickory. Mesquite, you can use if you want something a little stronger, a little heavier for your red meats. And so, as I mentioned, the listings above show the strength of smoke flavor in order, and the meat’s capability to take it in. Lighter smoke is used for weaker meats since weaker meats can more easily be overwhelmed.

My favorites generally speaking

Now, these are my favorites generally speaking. Applewood is my favorite for fish, whole chickens, whole turkeys, and vegetables. And hickory is my favorite for pork, beef, bison, and chicken parts, especially the wings. And when it comes to smoking, these are the two flavors that I look to pretty much all the time as my main go-to’s for flavors. And I can live a happy life with just these two. I don’t need the cherry, or the pecan, or the alder and all the others. I’ve tried a lot of flavors, but when it comes down to it for me, applewood and hickory are the best for me, the best in my book. I really like how they produce that flavor for me.

So that’s just my view on the different flavors of smoke and the ones that I prefer. It really just comes down to these two for me. Either it’s applewood or hickory depending on what I’m cooking as far as my preference. But now, I’m going to get into some of the specific wood types, the pellet types.

How to store wood pellets for smoking

Proper storage of your hardwood is key for your pellet preservation. The number one enemy for pellets is moisture. Moisture can ruin your hardwood and your BBQ hopes and dreams. Because our pellets are 100% natural and don’t have artificial fillers, moisture expands the wood and ultimately breaks it down completely. So unless you keep ‘em dry, you can kiss your dreams of having a burning hot grill goodbye.

Know a good pellet when you see one. These bad boys need to shine. You also want them to snap if you break them in half. No shine or snap? You might be in trouble. Watch out for dull and pellets that have crumbled as well. These aren’t doing your grill any favors. If your hardwood has a nice shine and you can hear that snap, you’ll be good to get your smoke on.

How and where you store your pellets is key for taking care of your wood. Follow our guide below and never worry about finding crumbly dust in your bag ever again.

1. Store pellets inside a dry area free from flooding, humidity, and mold. Garage or shed works best.

2. Do not leave the pellets in the bags they come in.

3. Grab one of our trusty pellet storage metal buckets. Wood pellet lid is airtight and doesn’t allow moisture to get in. You can also use a Rubbermaid tote.

Final Word

Ultimately, when you’re dealing with any decent pellets and you’ve already weeded out the duds (Each one on our list is good, we didn’t include any of the less impressive options, so you’re all set), but at this point it really comes down to price and taste. If you want to spend a bit more, a bit less, and finding the taste you like the most.

That ideal taste may come from cheaper pellets, or it may come from a more expensive bag, the best option is trial and error so we often recommend that people buy at least 2-3 bags to start with. With 2 bags, you can compare them directly to each other, and see which you like best. Then when it’s time to re-order, just head back to this page and re-order the bag that you liked the best, and another bag to compare it to this time. After a few orders, you’ll know exactly which type of pellets taste best and work best in your grill, just remember it’s a bit of a process.

You might love the first ones you go with, you might hate them (Not likely!), but either way, if you start with a couple of bags you’re well on your way. Some people just stick with one brand and are happy with it and never even try anything else and that’s a perfectly legitimate option too. Either way, you’ve got to start somewhere, and any of the choices on this list will have you off to a great start.
